SUSAN TORNTORE

YARN WINDING

In this workshop, we’ll be winding yarn around a 4” x 4” wood tile to play with yarns, textures,

and colors to make an art piece. As they are wrapped, the yarns are layered on each other

randomly or can be layered to make a pattern. We are familiar with yarn wraps on index cards

to determine warp size, sett, and colors, but yarn windings can take your color choice and

design process into a new dimension.

SUSAN WILL PROVIDE—

 An intro presentation with finished examples

 Handout with instructions and resources

 4x4” wood tiles—2 per person

 Additional masking tape

 Additional yarns

PARTICIPANTS WILL BRING—

 Roll of masking tape

 Small scissors

 Bits and bobs of yarn to play with –

o All kinds and colors

o Ribbons, eyelash, boucle, mohair, handspun…

o Thrums

o Butterflies, small balls, dead bobbins

IF YOU WILL BE ON ZOOM—

 Let us know in advance, and we will get handouts and tiles to you, if possible, or send

directions for making your own tiles with cardboard or Fome-Cor

 You will also need masking tape, small scissors, and yarn bits and bobs (see above)

During this presentation Deborah will present many different ways to finish the ends of your woven fabric and give you a taste for future possibilities.

THREADS THROUGH TIME

THE RISE, FALL AND REVIVAL

OF

TURKISH HANDWEAVING

In 2009, Jennifer set out to find high-quality, handwoven Turkish textiles—expecting a straightforward journey. What she uncovered instead was an endangered art form gasping for breath. Weaving had already vanished from Türkiye’s cities, and even in rural villages, looms sat silent, collecting dust or tucked away in storage out of sight.
